What is Labor Peace?

The Hospitality, Hotel and Restaraunt Organizing Council, AFl-CIO (HOTROC) is an organization dedicated to the unionization of the Hospitality Industry in the City of New Orleans. It is our contention that the establishment of labor unions in New Orleans' hospitality industry will benefit the residents of the city who make up the primary workforce in the industry. Unionization of the industry wil provide "living wages" and affordable benefits to the residents of the city that subsidize the hotel industry through tax incentives, tax abatements, guaranteed HUD loans and other monetary incentives.

At our marches, in our newsletters and at our media events, the term "Labor Peace" is widely used as one of the primary objectives of the organizing campaign. Although the term is widely utilized, very few people actually understand the definition as it is used by HOTROC. Therefore the following is a brief description of our interpretation of the term "Labor Peace".

"Labor Peace" is defined as a statement of neutrality obtained from the management of a given establishment. In other words, "Labor Peace" means that the management of a hotel will not engage in practices that impede their workers ablilty to exercise their legal right to organize and form labor unions for the purpose of collective bargaining. Furthermore, "Labor Peace" means that the management of a given establishment will not engage in anti-union activities such as harassment, intimidation, "captive audience" anti-union meetings or illegal terminations of workers.

When HOTROC calls for "Labor Peace" we are asking that management recognize the right of workers to form labor unions. That management recognize "card check" meaning that over 50% of employees sign cards asking thay they be represented by a labor union, the management of the establishment will negotiate a contract based, on the wishes of their employees.
